I must have been about sixteen when I first encountered the Tao Te Ching, along with a book on Zen Buddhism by D. T. Suzuki. Around the same time, I picked up a copy of Bertrand Russell’s History of Western Philosophy and found I couldn’t put it down. I’d caught the philosophy bug, and my interest in both Eastern and Western thought has never abated.
My postsecondary education, however, didn’t begin until I was already in my forties, by which time my theoretical interests centred mainly on Hegel and Marx. Unhappily, the philosophy departments in my neck of the woods were firmly committed to the Anglo-American analytical tradition, and no one was available to supervise the kind of thesis I wanted to write. Since practical circumstances militated against study abroad, I elected to do my graduate work in history instead. Although philosophy has always been my principal intellectual passion, it’s a field in which I remain almost entirely self-taught.
Here’s a sample of my scribblings in history and philosophy over a period of several decades. You’re welcome to read them online or download the PDFs, as you prefer.
